Scary Weekend

Every winter I get worried about colds & flu. Simply because I get sick so easy. I am the first one in the family to get whatever is floating around. I tend to stay sick all winter long too. There have been a few times I have even been sick in the dead of summer.

Imagine being 90 degrees outside and you have a cold like its 15 below. Its awesome!

I worry for my children as well. Mainly Courtney. Especially when I get a letter stating that pertussis is going around and there has been confirmed cases at the school my child is attending.

This time, I didn’t get that letter. This time, all I got was a daughter who was coughing so bad that she couldnt catch her breath, she was gasping and couldn’t stop coughing. I was scared. I worry every time she gets this barky cough. Simply because she cannot be vaccinated against pertussis. She is allergic to the vaccine.

I took her to the emergency room. The doctor took one listen to her and said “I am almost positive she has whopping cough”. Fabulous. She was swabbed. Sent home with antibiotics along with the whole family. And we were under strict orders to quarantine ourselves. No contact with anyone. No school or work. Test results would be back Monday afternoon. I was waiting for them to come back in the room saying Courtney needed to be hospitalized.

That was saturday night.

Monday we called. The labs were still sitting here. They hadn’t even been sent yet. Because someone failed to tell us that labs dont go out on the weekends. So, I had to worry one more day.

I called this afternoon because no one had called me yet.

Thankfully, Courtney does NOT have whopping cough. Praise Jesus.

So tomorrow, she will go to school & I will go to work. And all will be right in the world.

Until next winter.

I urge you to please vaccinate your children. Or if they are sick, PLEASE do not send them to school sick. You risk infecting other children.

I've noticed that somemites adults don't think they need the booster shot for pertussis. While adults may not get really sick, they can pass it on to kids, who can die. My doctor told me to get my booster, so I did. I'm proud to be protecting myself as well as kids in my community.
